~drosana's entry: "I'd go by Puck. It's the name of the impish character featured in Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream (hehe, Even Robin Hood has taken his name from this character! Puck is also called Robin Goodfellow. Robin Hood's mother even called him Robin-Puck!)

Like him, I like to joke around and act a bit silly, even more so, I love to be mischievous and sneaky. I am good at lying and misleading, leaving most to believe they know me well, when in fact, they're more acquainted with one of my facades. I am a master of disguise without the need of a mask (or fake mustache, thought it cannot be said that I haven't tried it anyway!) Despite all of this, I'm a laugh and a rather good natured person. I try to keep to my manners and with my boyish appearance, most call me a gentleman! I have a flair for the dramatic and fun. So that's my entry! *tips hat and jumps off*"

Congrats on winning the limited edition version of Legend! I'll Note you with details. :)

We had well over 150+ entries combining all deviantArt, Blogger, Facebook, Twitter, and Goodreads entries. Man, you guys are GOOD at coming up with rebel names. I love these! I may do another contest in the near future where the prize is to feature your rebel name in Legend 2 as a side character. :) Thank you all for participating!

The winner was chosen by a random number generator and a list of all the entries. While the winner was randomly chosen, I also wanted to give a shout out to my 3 favorite entries from you guys:

1) (from deviantArt's ~Star-Bunny): "I'd be Pancakes... cause pancakes are awesome. They are unassumingly delicious and its hard to be upset with someone named pancakes."

This just made me laugh out loud.

2) (from Twitter's BookWormLove): "marie_Lu My streetname would be Gadget (It was my nickname in girl scouts for years because I'm all about technological stuff) :) #Legend"

Gadget from Rescue Rangers was one of my favorite childhood characters. LOVE girls with techie know-how!

3) (from Facebook's Jeni Hackett): "Assuming astronomy is roughly the same (or at least the names of the stars), I'd go by Polaris after the North Star. It's a good name for a 'guiding' rebel, which is what I'd likely aim to be; less of a hell-raiser, and more of a care-taker, guardian sort. Maybe I'd run a safehouse, where the North Star parallel ties in as Polaris has always been a star associated with pointing towards home and safety."

I love astronomy. Yay Polaris.

Again, thank you so much to all who entered! I had a ton of fun, and I hope you did too. :) Stay tuned for further contests!

Update: Legend's official playlist is UP today, over on the official Legend page! facebook.com/legendtheseries Hop over there to hear all the tracks I had on repeat while I was writing the book. Some Michael Jackson, some Abney Park, some epic soundtracks....etc. Also, this week's featured character? June's shmexy older brother, Metias. Get the details on him at the Legend page.

Also, there are now two months left before Legend releases. ENSUE PANIC. The time has come to pre-order Legend, if you haven't done so yet and are interested! amzn.to/iYwLXP

----

Legend's official Facebook page facebook.com/legendtheseries has now reached 502 "Likes", thanks to you guys!

I said before that once it passed 500, I would give away a very special, limited edition version of Legend. So here we go, as promised!

The Prize: I have exactly ONE of these. Here's what it looks like. www.facebook.com/media/set/?se… This is a limited edition version of the advance copies of Legend (which doesn't go on public sale until Nov. 29 this year). Penguin, my publisher, made a very small number of these. They probably won't make any more. Unlike the regular advance copies, these are packaged in a gorgeous box that opens up into a limited edition magnet, profile info of Day and June, and etc. (And, of course, it also includes a softcover advance copy of Legend.) The one that I have is still in its plastic wrap and brand new.

How long this giveaway contest runs: From today (9/27) until midnight Pacific Standard Time on next Tuesday (10/4).

Open to: Everyone, both in the U.S. and internationally.

What you have to do: (You can enter by posting a comment to this journal entry right here. OR, you can also enter by commenting on the same journal entry at my writing blog marielu.blogspot.com , my Facebook page facebook.com/marielubooks , or send me a tweet twitter.com/Marie_Lu .)

At any of the aforementioned places, answer the following in your comment:

All rebels in the Republic, the dystopian future version of America in Legend, have a street name. (For example, "Day" is the street name of Legend's boy protagonist. He has his reasons for nicknaming himself that. :) ) If you were a rebel in the Republic, what would your street name be, and why?

On next Wednesday (10/5), I will read through all the entries and pick a random winner.

Have fun! Looking forward to hearing your street names, rebels. :)

If it were to be something not Spyro-related, it'd have to be Twist.

I would like my street name to be something simple, yet at the same time very complex as to why I would choose it. Knowing myself, I'd probably choose the name "Faith" for more than one reason(one of them being that I really enjoy that particular name).
I think Faith would be good in that in means to have complete trust and/or confidence in something or someone, which is what I want people to do. I want them to trust me completely, and I don't ever want to let people down.
Another reason is obviously for religious reasons. I have complete faith in God and that will most likely influence a lot of things I do, or do not do, as a rebel.

If I were lucky enough to exist in your book and (not by chance) just happened to be a rebel, I believe that my name would be "Mercury."
Mainly because Mercury was a trickster and made it his business to mess with order and rules. I know that somehow, I would be able to access records of mythology and fall in love with the name immediately.
The name also refers to the element Mercury, which is slippery, and nearly impossible to get a hold of - which, I think, would aggravate the Republic to no end.
Not to boast, but I believe that the name would fit me perfectly.
If I don't win this amazing copy - which we all know is extremely likely - I will definitely buy your book. And good luck!

If you were a rebel in the Republic, what would your street name be, and why?

I'd have to go with Lomedraug, it's a name from Quenya (yes Lord of the Rings Quenya) which translates out to mean "Night/Dusk Wolf". Calculating and fierce, if you mess with anyone from the 'pack', you'll probably find yourself in a huge amount of trouble with the alpha.

"If you were a rebel in the Republic, what would your street name be, and why?"

I would choose Anaxilea, the name of one of the Greek Amazon royal family members whom we've lost virtually all our information about through the centuries. She bore an eagle on her shield as a symbol of her leadership and wisdom. I'd choose this name to come across as a strong, wise leader, and a skilled warrior. The mystery of her past would be a perfect metaphor for exactly what I'd want to do in the Republic... stay hidden, stay mysterious, and stay out of the public eye as I ran my missions!

"Raven" would be my street name. Why you may ask. It's always the first thing that comes to mind with me. I have a fascination with Ravens (so much so that I joke I've inadvertently adopted the raven as my totem). They are a very intelligent and savvy sort of bird, social and cooperative but can also function on their own. I don't know...it just seems to fit...and Raven always seems to appear somewhere when coming up with any sort of nickname with me. ;)

I follow you on Goodreads, but I'll post this here again anyway ;)

My street name would be Reket. This name holds strong meaning for me, as it is a combination of my twin brother's and my names; it can mean "to be remembered", via "rec it" (record it); and it also is the name of someone who is not to be messed with: someone powerful enough to "wreck it".

Family, Impact, and Strength = Reket.

As a side-note, I would also like to say that I like the name because it is gender-neutral.

If you were a rebel in the Republic, what would your street name be, and why?

I think it would be "Lit". Firstly as "literature" because I spend most of my time lost in books and writing. Secondly as referring to light it works as a semi-corny metaphor for both knowledge, which I love and try to share even if the people around me aren't as enthusiastic about it as I am, and for optimism, which underlies even my pessimistic/realistic comments :XD:

Hmmmm.....Based on myself, I'd probably end up being called Polarity. The reason for this is because I have massive mood swings from depression to mania, and I don't really do much too amend it. Also, I'd be opposing the Republic, so I'm on the opposite polarity /shotforbadjoke.

The only other one I can think of is Scribe, because I love to read and write, and would probably be part of a rebel newspaper, informing people of the nations history and so forth :3

I'd want to be called V, but I'm nowhere near that cool.

Oooh gosh, if I was a rebel in the Republic and I had to pick a name...I would pick Ezra!

Reasons?

1. My real name is boyish/androgynous sounding and it has worked to my advantage in journalism and politics to have a male name. Ezra is a boy's name but sounds sort of feminine.

2. I have a thing for difficult poetry by crazy sonnova bitch poets like Ezra Pound.

If I were a Rebel, I would call myself Cypress. The cypress is a climbing flower that is beautiful, but all parts of it are poisonous. Right now I'm playing a table top game, and my character, Cypress, is a scavenger. She scavenges among ruins and searches for treasure. I see this as a resilient name.

Yay - thanks for holding another contest!

If you were a rebel in the Republic, what would your street name be, and why?

As for the street name...that's hard. I think I would call myself Hope. First reason is because Hope is a regular name, so people wouldn't think it's that strange. The other reason would be because hope is more than just a wish. It plays amazing roles within the world. Hope inspires people - to live, to help, to change, to believe, and to find the truth. The rebels will end up finding out the truth of the world they live in, whether they are prepared or not - and hope is what will help them get through.
But the one other thing hope does, is that it gives a reason for something. If I were to rebel against the government, it is because of "hope" in its noun form. Hope for the future, or something like "life is full of hope". It's something that everyone can relate to, hoping and wishing - and that way it might be easier for a rebel like me to hide from the government and still spread my ideals.
And I feel like Hope is a pretty fitting name for my personality ahaha...

If you were a rebel in the Republic, what would your street name be, and why?

I think I'd go with Lys, short for Lysistrata (which is just too long for a street name, though I might be able to bank on it being misspelled every time I get caught). Lysitrata is Aristophanes' Athenian heroine, named after a Spartan queen, who arranged a sex strike amongst all the Athenian and Spartan women in order to end the Peloponnesian War, which was killing their sons and husbands.
As a classics major, this name obviously resonates with me. But I'd also like to think that Lysistrata's courage and inventiveness to obtain her goal would inspire me then, as they do now.

(Also, cannot wait until the book comes out!)

My rebel name would be Rise. Living as a street rebel in a world like the one in Legend would almost require me to leave my old life behind, letting that past self die and becoming something new—rising again. "Rise" would remind me of that every time I heard it. The name would also represent the world I'm fighting to save, to help rise once again from the grave and enter a new day.

If you were a rebel in the Republic, what would your street name be, and why?

I'd choose Rider - it suggests constant movement and action, which I think is apt for a rebel! It sort of suits my often restless nature, and suggests a sense of freedom (or longing for freedom, maybe- again, befitting of a rebellious cause) of being able to ride away to wherever you want to be- or even just wherever you're needed!

If I were a rebel, my street name would either be Aeolian or Earth (ground/soil, not the planet).

Aeolian: Has connections to classical mythology wind gods, music, and describes how the wind can move, erode, and shape the earth. (Maybe "Aria" as an alternative...)

Earth: It's an element that fits my personality and character. Patient, stable, practical, calm, etc. Also, it's what you have to walk on to get anywhere and provides the foundation for buildings.

Hi!

Ohh I'd love to say it would be Augusta, but that does not sound cool enough for non-Classics geeks, does it?
It's sort of the street name Queen Zenobia tried to give herself =P And got her captured/killed...
Also, it's pretty.

On the more boring side it would be Zen, but since it is simply a shortened version of my name I do not think it counts as being very creative. (Unless your name is not Zenobia and Zen for short. Then I think it just has a cool ring to it.)

My decision is Snow. It sounds similar to my name but can also suggest some other layers of cool-ness. Err, the first of them being that snow it literally cold, but it can also freeze, it can cause the sky to be a mysterious grey, it can float down dreamily. And more metaphors. Also, it is quite similar to the concept of 'Day' so I feel it would fit into the world of Legend nicely. That's just my opinion though ^_^

If I were to have a rebel name, it would be Dantès. Not just because it sounds totally bad ass, but if you get that it's a reference to one of my all time favorite books (and a famous work of literature by Mr. Dumas himself), you mess with Dantès, and you will get some ridiculously meticulously elaborately planed revenge. Fear a rebel with a creative mind!

My street name would be "Crazy" because I have no set mentality and can (consciously) change from emotional state to emotional state simply based on whether or not I can be bothered to fufill the criteria for acting in a certain manner. On the outside this looks simply random - sometimes anger is justified by an extreme lashing out while sometimes the same thing evokes a "meh" response - thus making it look like I'm crazy.

If I was a rebel in the Republic, my street name would be Ruby.
The ruby is the birthstone for July, and I was born in July. It represents vitality and passion, which are always good qualities for a rebel movement to have. The color can also represent sacrifice, which has a good chance of happening in something worth dying for.
Also, the declaration for independence in America was signed in July. I think the people then could be viewed as rebels, fighting for their independence. So Ruby--> July would be a reminder of ones who fought for a cause before in the same land, and a reminder of courage to keep up the fight for change.

Phoenix, or Black Phoenix...
I've been a sick person all of my life. We didn't know it until recently, but I have a genetic disease called EDS that prevents my collagen from working, so my ligaments don't work. I've done well with it though. I've done sports, I've never been good at them, I draw even though I have a bad tremor in my hands, I always fall down, but I get up. I've became depressed to the point that I wished I could die, but then I would draw or pet a cat or something to remind me how blessed I am. I'm not a very good phoenix. When I rise again, I still keep some of the ashes from the previous times, but I rise, nonetheless. :)

I think I'd be Riot. Firstly, it's a word I've always liked. Secondly, whenever I imagine myself in a dystopian setting, I like to think I'd be in some sort of position of leadership, and having a name that refers to what I would be wanting to do seems like a pretty clear message. And beyond that, I'm a pretty fun person, and I can imagine someone saying "Well aren't you just a riot." and me being all "Now that is a street name."

However, for the record, I also like Ruin just as much.

If you were a rebel in the Republic, what would your street name be, and why?

I would go by the name Panther. In heraldry, the panther is used to symbolize protection, particularly of younger people and children. I am highly protective of my siblings and any kids I know, and I feel like I would be the one to take charge and keep them safe, while still fighting tooth and nail for what I believe in. The panther's heraldric description is, "fierce but tender, and will protect her children with her life." Whether the children are actually children or just another way of describing the idea of rebellion - a child that might grow into a new nation and a new order - I feel this is a very fitting description of my personality.
